Changes to this year's contest...

Hello Entrants and Judges!

There will be some fairly big changes to the contest this year. Remember, we're a new contest and the process of fine tuning does take a few years!

One of the two major changes is the reduction of categories. Between getting enough entries and having enough judges we've pared down the number of categories from nine to five (possibly six, we're still discussing). The five definite categories are:

1) Erotic
2) Historical
3) Contemporary
4) Romantic Suspense/Series Action Adventure
5) Specialized: Alternate Earth Histories, Dystopian, Futuristic, Fantasy, Time Travel, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

The possible sixth category is GLBTQ...

The second major change is the switch to a single round where judges are required to read the whole book.

The few smaller tweaks include:

a) score sheets will not automatically be sent back to the entrants; if entrants want them back, they must check the appropriate check box
b) the comments on the score sheets are being eliminated
c) the questions on the score sheets are being tweaked

If you have any questions, please let us know at carolynaward@ntrwa.org

First Round Winding Down

The last remaining scores are trickling in and  we will have finalists to announce soon.

Sadly we had quite a few judges poop out in the middle of judging or altogether without notifying us and we've had to scramble and ask other judges to take on even more entries.

Thanks so much to each one of you who took on more and more and more entries to help us get our first round completed. You guys and gals are fantastic and we appreciate your Herculean efforts in our contest.

Why does it take so long to send out panels?

Once the contest officially closes and before book panels can go out, there are things that need to happen...

If a category doesn't receive a minimum number of entries then entrants need to be contacted and entries moved or withdrawn.

If there are not enough judges in a category based on first choices, then second choice comes into play and judges are moved around.

Final round judges need to be chosen and notified, adjustments made as needed.

Then once all that has settled down, books can be assigned to judges. But even that's not as simple as plug and play. Heat levels need to be accounted for as well as ensuring a judge doesn't get more than one book by an author if the author has submitted two books in a category.

All of these things take time, since most parties involved hold down some sort of job or may have small children and may not be able to check their email very often.

We thank you for patience as we juggle the behind-the-scenes tasks.

The contest is officially closed--

Clover and I are hard at work sorting judges and entries at the moment.

Unless thee are major issues, entry panels will start being sent out toward the end of the week.

Please have patience with us.

Happy New Year!

Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to get back to work. And that includes promoting and advertising your books.

One great way to promote and advertise is to enter the Carolyn Readers Choice Award Contest…

Are you asking how that works? Well, all our judges are readers only, so that’s five to eight new pair of eyes on your book! You might find a new reader or two amongst those judges.

And if you win (one winner per category), your book cover will be included in a communal ad! Last year, the ad appeared on the RT Daily Blog page for the two weeks prior to RWA’s National Conference.

The fee is only $25!

There are nine categories to choose from, but each one caps out at thirty entries, so if you’re contemplating entering, you’d better make that decision sooner rather than later.

To receive contest updates once you’ve entered, subscribe to the blog!

Have a wonderful, successful, prosperous New Year.
